A Reflection Guide for Parents and Educators

Before You Label the Behavior

Cultural SEL  ·  Culturally Responsive Social Emotional Learning

Behavior is often what we notice first. It is not what is shaping the child.

This guide gives you a lens to slow down, look further, and respond to what is actually in front of you, not just what you see on the surface.

Before You Label the Behavior

A Cultural SEL Reflection Guide for Parents and Educators

Identity

Who is this child across environments and cultural norms?

Emotions

What might they be feeling but not expressing clearly?

Context

What is happening around them that may be shaping their response?

Belonging

Do they feel accepted, or different, in this space?

What you get

Two pages. A different way of seeing.

The Lens

Six questions to move past reaction and ask what is actually shaping the behavior: identity, emotions, context, relationships, awareness, belonging.

The Reframes

Five common labels, disrespect, shut down, defiance, overreaction, off-task, and what might actually be happening behind each one.

Real-Life Example

A concrete scenario showing how a behavior gets mislabeled and the four questions that change how you read it.

WHO IS THIS FOR

You already care. This gives you something to work with.

  • Parents who feel their child is being misread in school or community settings

  • Educators who want to respond to students with more context, not just more control

  • Homeschooling families building environments that reflect who their children actually are

  • Community leaders and facilitators working with children daily, often without a framework

  • Anyone raising or working with a child whose identity the room was not built for

Hey There!

I'm Faith, the creator behind Cultural SEL. I'm a multicultural parent, born and raised in Germany within a Ghanaian household, now raising multicultural children in the United States.

Through parenting, PTA committee leadership, and lived experience across cultures and environments, I kept seeing the same pattern: children being interpreted through a lens that was never built with them in mind.

Cultural SEL was created to help parents and educators move past their default lens and interpret and respond to children through identity, culture, relationships, social dynamics, emotional safety, and lived experience.
